Well, 512MB of RAM in Windows 98 isn't always a good idea. Earlier versions of Windows (95, 98, 98SE, and even ME) all had problems with memory & resource management. Granted, even Win2K and WinXP aren't perfect, but they are far more advanced.

Besides lowering the amount of RAM you have, there are a number of things you can try. First off, read this FAQ to get an idea of why this might be happening to you along with a few tricks to try:

faq615-1638

* Be sure to pay close attention to the suggestion about MaxFileCache. That one will probably help you the most

Finally, take a look at your resources right after you boot up (right-click "My Computer", click Properties, and go to the Performance tab). You'll see the % of System Resources that are available. This percentage should easily be around 85% or more right after rebooting. If not, then you've got some work to do on controlling what starts up with Windows.

Post back and let us know where this gets ya!
