have newer Dell running XP Pro. After cleaning up PC, now have message Windows XP cpind not start because the following is missing or corrupt: \Windows\System32\Config\System.

Following available directions, I renamed the SYSTEM file in the Config foler. Am able to get to Recoevery Console but the System file does not exist in the Repair directory. Could it be somewhere else? Am I doomed to a Repair reinstallation. Is there anything I can copy from the CD-ROM or elsewhere? thanks.

_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM might be available in the Snapshot folder of an earlier RP folder in System Volume Information sub folders.

Whether you can do anything with it depends on how comfortable you are playing with (amending) this procedure.

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language.

What backups are available to you?

A repair installation may be all there is?
