system vs system32...

Hi all,
I am writing a set up script to copy dll files to the windows\system32 or windows\system based on the most current version. Is there a reason to use one path over the other? Why are both there? Thank you in advance for responses.

Windows 95/98 systems use the \system folder for all OS critical files. Windows NT/2000/XP use \system32 for all critical folders or files. That is the simplest way to put it. When createing the script besure you have seperator for NT or non NT clients. James Collins

Ok, understood. But then why does XP have System and System32 directories?

Windows 2000 System will have it as well. Depending on what programs are installed. Some programs dont like the system32 folder and MUST use a system folder. It is installed by default in Windows 2000 and XP. James Collins

So does this mean on a Windows 98 machine that there is no system32 directory?

I only need this process to work on Win 98. Thank you for all of your help.

There is a system32 folder on win98 but the system folder is one that matters.

(system32 on NT/2k/XP is for 32 bit and system for 16 bit apps)
