Hi

For the last 3 days, my windows 2000 server starts using 100% of its cpu for the system process.

The problmem is that i don't have allot of time to check where it is comming from.

The high usage of cpu only lasts a couple of minutes, but in that time it is almost impossible to work on the server (remote and local).

I also had the problem a couple of weeks ago. Then i installed SP3 and the problem dissapeared, until a couple of days ago.

any suggestions?

Have you loaded any Virus detection software lately. I once had this happen and found that the Mcafee Anti-Virus caused the MSDTC to eat up resources. Sorry, I don't remember all the details. It has to do with some port. I ended up starting the server in Safe Mode (hit F8 on boot) and then go into the services section and disable the MSDTC from starting automatically.
You might want to look at the Mcafee site. There are a few references to it.

No problem with the virus scanners. We have been using Norton AV Corporate edition for a long time and it never caused any problems.

I already know what s causing it. When powerpoint files are accessed on the server, the server has the high cpu use for a couple of minutes. When I remove the client from the network, the server goes back to normal.

Microsoft doesn't seem to know about a problem of this kind and also other system administrators don't seem to find what s wrong.

in conclusion: HELP!!!
