System State restore

I am trying to restore a clients backup to a VM session machine to QA some new applications.

I have installed 2003 server and MS office.

Run a restore of the system state and VM gets stop: 0x0000007b error. This seems to be a disk error which makes sence as VM has different disks to the HP server at the clients!

How can I go about resolving this and performing a full system restore?

To update - i have tried to do a repair install of VM Tools directly after doing the system state restore in a hope that would repair the disk drivers

Still blue screens on reboot and I can't start in safe mode!

When you restore the system state it restores the system registry. This loads up all of the old hardware drivers. I'm really not that suprised that it isn't working correctly. Have the client send you the pieces of the registry that you need to get the applications to work correctly.

That is what i assumed so would like to make the most valid QA system I can from the system state backup else it is bearly of anyuse unless you are restoring to the exact same platform.

NTBackup does not seem to allow any selection with in the system state - an all or nothing option.

Is this a limitation of NTBackups systemstate backups?

Another peice of rubbish software from Microsoft once you try not just using a wizard!! Sorry rant over lol. Would still love this to work...?

So if system state restores everything is there then anyway of putting back in the drivers for the hardware platform before doing the restart of the machine to allow for restoring a system on to different hardware?

Get the VMWare driver and have a bash at

Although, you'll have to create a "virtual boot floppy"

Dunno about support for VM - but Cristie provide a product called CBMR. Check

for details & trial software.

One of the useful functions is to boot your target server from Cristie product CD into Linux kernel (text-menu driven) and start the "Dissimilar Hardware Server". You can then connect over IP from another Windows platform with the Cristie S/W installed to your running linux kernel and load device drivers ready for your first boot. Goodness knows how it works, but it does indeed work.

Have not tried it with VM - but it's on my list
