Have recently had two separate systems develop a somewhat similar problem. On one (Hewlett Packard Vectra VL Series 4, 5/133), the system evenually powers down when I try a warm boot. First it hangs with a blank screen and then when I manually power down and restart, it powers itself down during the boot sequence (screen remains blank). Can then cold boot normally but have to got thru Safe Mode or step by step confimation. After that, cold booting works fine. Tried reformatting the hard drive using Win 98 startup disk and warm booting from C: prompt -- same problem.

The second system is a Cyrix 233 that hangs with a blinking cursor in upper left corner during restart from Win98. Will cold boot normally. Tried all the Win98 restart fixes to no avail. I get the same problem after reformatting the hard drive (to eliminate Win98) and using CTRL-ALT-DEL from C: prompt. I know the Cyrix reputation but this machine was working fine with Win98 before this problem developed and I can't think of anything that I did that may have caused it.

Any suggestions as to cause, fix??? Thanks.
