I select a restore point and instruct system restore to restore the system state as at that point. System restore shows a dialog box with a progress bar which quickly goes to one quarter across then waits a long time (several minutes) before suddenly rushing across to the end. The system restarts and I logon. System restore then tells me that no restore has taken place and I find that the system state is the same as it was before I attempted to restore to an earlier state.

There must be files which hold the restore information so where are they? I would appreciate someone giving me a few hints to troubleshoot this difficulty as I haven't the foggiest notion what to do.

I forgot to mention that system restore has been re-enabled after being disabled for several months. All drives are monitored.

The system works perfectly otherwise.

Once you disable System Restore, it wipes out ALL restore points. Sorry! [shadessad]

Fortunately, the system is very healthy. I did however want to take advantage of system restore so that I can try some tweaks and quickly revert to the normal setup. I don't therefore have a problem with the loss of restore points.

The problem is that new restore points cannot be restored.

Ah well, if that is all I have to worry about ......

System Restore will not be able to restore your system to any point (or time) where your computer configuration is/was faulty. It can only restore to a fault free configuration.

Try running your System Restore from Safe Mode, you'll be surprised how often it will succeed in that mode when it fails in Normal Mode.
