Hello,

I'm trying to do a system restore and everything works fine until the screen that says "Confirm Restore Point Selection"(Screen after restore point is selected). When I click next it does nothing. I can click back or cancel so it isn't locked up. Tried in safe mode too.

Thanks,

Tom

302796 - Troubleshooting System Restore in Windows XP

Some other things to try.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Have a look at this too.

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language.

Even more simple with a working machine you can do all the above automatically via a download of the appropriate Guided Help exe.

Thanks for the advice linney,

I already had read the "Troubleshooting System Restore in Windows XP" and none of those helped. Before I posted here I did a google search and found other message boards with the same issue but none of them posted back their solutions - I hate that.

I thought about doing the reinstall but this is not my computer, its a friends I'm helping with, and there is no xp sticker on the outside and he bought it 2nd hand. I know reinstall asks for the windows key. So I don't want to do that.

I think the recovery console route to fix the registry is the way I should go to fix the issue, so anyone with this problem should probably try that or the reinstall would fix it, but...

I was able to get solve the original problems that lead me down the road to the system restore in the first place. I think I'll just leave well enough alone. If he needs system restore later, I will follow the instructions to the recovery console registry fix.

Thanks for the help,

Tom

Tom - if its working ok now, might be worth turning system restore off and on (which will clear all old restore points) - which might also clear the problem for the future.
