I installed the new Nero 6 and ran the included program Nero BackItUp. I cancelled the process before finishing the backup of one of the folders becuase it was taking to long to complete. After rebooting XP System Restore was gone from the "My Computer" Property's tab. I ran Regedit and changed the key DisableSR from 0 to 1 at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore

This re-enabled the System Restore tab in "My Computer" Property and found that System Restore was disabled there.

Trying to untick the box produced the message "System Restore has encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives. Please restart your machine and try again"

I re-started many times without results. Tried running Scandisk and Defrag but the problem persisted. There is only one hard drive in this machine, plus a a DVD/CD-R Unit and a DVD/CD-R Virtual Unit created with Alcohol 52% (these units do not appear in the System Restore tab).

Excepting this issue everything seems to be fine. Any suggestion on how to "Restore" System Restore?

As a guess, your registry tweak enabled the tab to appear but it in fact does nothing to start the service entry required for system restore.

Start, run, service.msc

Is the service started? Is the default startup action Automatic? Edit to make it so in both cases.

A good troubleshooter on system resoter was produced by Microsoft. Be sure to see the included links at the bottom of the page as well:

Thanks for you answer bcastner.

I have problems starting the service. It is set to Automatic but does not start. I will check the reasons and get back to you with feedback.

Thanks

Back again,

When I try to start the Service I get a message that says something like "Your System Restore started and then stopped. Some services stop if they have nothing to do like Logs and Alerts" This is only after tweaking the register that I mentioned in my first message. If I don't do this it just tells me Error 5: Access Denied (I am the administrator and only user of the computer)when I try to start it. I tried again with the Properties tab but it does not work. This is getting interesting (and balls-breaking)

First, undo your registry change. I fear it is misleading the OS.

Second, have I a link for you. Nearly every conceivable method to restart system restore was examined for TunaBoy57 recently: thread779-596023

Thanks bcastner...

I solved the problem after your last message and using the thread that you recommended.

I must admit that APUK provided the tool.

Here is what I did. Opened System Volume Information Properties > Security Tab > Advance > Permissions Tab > And ticked "Inherit from parent the permissions......" > Yes. System Restore Tab came back. I have to say that I have checked this before but just went into the Properties tab of the mentioned folder and I was with full permissions there. I failed to click in Advance (where the children folders are allowed too)

Thanks a lot to you and to APUK.
