System monitoring recommendation?

Curious what experiences everyone has with open source monitoring softwares/agents for workstations.

Specifically what do you use for desktops and laptops out in the field to maybe email in a report when a problem is detected? These would be systems not part of a VPN or have any direct communication with a primary network LAN, just direct Internet access.
