I have two Win 98 machines - one is quite basic and it runs about 48 kernel threads - about the only unusual stuf is taht it has the dsl software, and it's the NAT machine with browsegate running.

The second machine has all my "stuff" and runs 170 threads. Can I kill individual threads (like unix?) Also kernel cpu is 80-95 percent (versus 6 percent on the NAT box).

Is this normal - if the box is sitting there, why would cpu be 80 percent? And 170 threads?

Sure you can. Open up MSCONFIG (from the run command) and under the startup tab uncheck all the items that you do not want running at startup. Leave things like you AntiVirus, Task Monitor and System Try checked but most everything else can go.

It sounds like you have a lot of things running at startup. This will help shorten you boot times too! We are always looking for new members at our computer forums: Please come join our community too.
