Well, I just discovered this. I went to my accessories file from start, all programs and attempted to get system information from system tools. Well, what happened was I was tranported to Help and Support center. There was no help listed in help and support. I am no longer able to access my system information. Running XP Pro SP2. No adware, no viruses. Anyone heard of this one before? If so, how do I get this service back? Is this causing any other problems? everything else seems to run fine so far (exception! DVD Xcopy still does not work right) but I haven't run everything yet.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If you Start, Run,
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\msinfo32.exe"

does that work? If so, the shortcut in your All Programs listing is incorrect. Right-click, Properties, and edit the target path.

If not, does the above path have msinfo32.exe?
Do a Find for the file, and place a copy in the folder above.

Bcastner,

When I tried that, and I should have put it in my thread, I did try the Start, Run,
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\msinfo32.exe"
and it does the same thing. I have an Intel Pentium 4 2. 8 GHZ not Athelon. The other link you sent does not seem to be describe my problem. Is this in the running services? If so, which one? I wonder if it was inadvertently turned off. Anyway, one in Help and Support, I can get my system info by clicking "Use tools to view system information ..... '

Thanks Bill

But still can't get it from system information.

I wil download and use it immediately.

Thanks Bill

Steve

I am running Windows XP Pro on this machine though.

I don't recognize the HH workshop nor the MS Help 2 Run-time components.

After running the program I tried to open my system info and again still going to Help and Support.

Maybe you know what the HH workshop and Help 2 runtime are.
Thanks again Bill.

Please let me know if these MSGS mean anything to you.

Your listing is fine. The other help system files would come from such things as install Visual Studio.

Open notepad and copy/paste the below as win32.cmd :

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\atl.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netshell.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\hnetcfg.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netman.dll

Save the file, double click to run and answer any prompts. Reboot and test again.

Have you tried typing Winmsd in the Start Run box to see if that opens up System Information?

Msinfo32.exe Generates a "Can't Collect Information" Error Message

I want to thank both of you for the effort. I want to reformat just the "C" section of my drive ( I have it partitioned into two sections, C & D) Can I just format C and not d partiion and reinstall windows? I am tired of playing with it. It is freezing again for no good reason that I can find.

If D Drive is just a partition with data files on it you should have no problems just formatting your C Drive and ignoring D Drive and re-installing XP to C Drive.

Well I attempted to repair windows by using the Repair part after booting from the CD. But having no Idea what to do when the DOS screen came up I was unable to fix. I reinstalled windows but shoud have reformated the C partition as I lost all my programs anyway and now I have a bunch of other folders in my douments and setting section such as: Default user.Windows as well as default user, localservices.NTauthority.000, as wellas Localservices, Networkservices.NTauthority.000, as well as Networkservices, Steve.STEVE-3P5UKITYQ4, as well as Steve, Etc. I have to reinstall all my software even though it is still installed on my D drive because all the registry entries have been removed. The GREAT news is this, after doing this I discovered my slave drive (E) had bad blocks. It is a brand new maxtor 60 Gig drive. I ran dskchck and there were errors I ran power max and found errors I then downloaded the latest powerMax software from Maxtor's web-site and it found the errors and fixed them. I was impressed that the powerMax software (ver. 4.09) was able to fix the bad blocks. I have been runing for two days now with no problems. I want to thank you both bcastner and Linney for taking the time to help me. You guys are GREAT. Everyone here is appreciated because all youall take time away from doing other things to help us poor misguided creatures and I appreciate everyone of yall.
Anyway I hope this helps someone else who might be experencing the same type of problem (i.e. system freezing) I am stil unsure where the system info went but I have it back now after the reinstall. Thanks again tp EVEYONE who take the time to help.
