Hi
I have just got a couple more 7200 VXR's and I've noticed that whilst doing a sh ver the IOS image is shown as

System image file is "sup-slot0:unknown"

The actual IOS is c7200-p-mz.120-22.S6.bin and even when specifying where to boot the system image from i.e.

boot system flash disk0:c7200-p-mz.120-22.S6.bin

and reload, it always comes up the same 'unknown'
the router seems ok with no errors, it's just a bit annoying. Does anyone know why this happens?

Hi, there may be a good chance that the ios image was named "unknown". Just do a show slot0: or dir slot0: if the flash card is bigger than 20MB.... cheers...

Hi
Router#sh disk0:
-#- --length-- -----date/time------ path
1 7389024 Mar 23 1983 06:45:20 c7200-p-mz.120-22.S6.bin

40566784 bytes available (7389184 bytes used)
As you can see the IOS is a valid image and boots up using it, still with the same 'unknown result'

However if I upgrade the IOS to 12.3 for example and reload and sh ver

System returned to ROM by reload at 07:16:42 UTC Mon Apr 26 2004
System image file is "sup-slot0:/c7200-is-mz.123-4.T2.bin

As you can see it now finds it.

But what actually is a sup-slot? What does 'sup' stand for and whats the reason for it?

SUP - supervisor. It is "heart" of your router:)

Hi, I thought supervisors were switch processors, and the NPE was the 'heart' of a 7206.

Cheers,
Fil.

If everything is coming your way then you're in the wrong lane.

Hi, in regards to the sup-slot0: display: When use ATA flash disk and c7200-boot-mz.120-XX.S, System image file is not displayed correctly. To fix this you may need to upgrade your bootimage too... Cheers...
