System hang with external HP CD-RW drive

Have a Win2K box with both an internal CD-R drive and use an external HP CD-RW drive that I also use with a laptop. When I put a CD in the HP drive, the system will hang, at times, for several minutes. As long as this drive is attached to the PC, loading CD's into the internal drive will also hang. This behavior goes away when the HP external drive is disconnected.

Have downloaded and installed the latest drivers available via the HP web site, but no change in behavior. Have also exhausted the knowledge of the HP support techs... :)

Does anyone have an idea why this might be happening and, if so, what I might be able to do to resolve the issue?
