System grinds to a halt after deletes

When I delete a large number of files (200+), thereafter the whole system runs incredibly slow. The task bar at the bottom responds normally, but any open window will take upwards of five minutes to respond to a single mouse click. The desktop never gets repainted, so ghosts of apps and windows remain behind to confuse me. Only a reboot will return the system to normal.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any thoughts? I have an E-Machine 600mhz pentium with an 80 gig drive (7 gigs free) and 256 megs of memory.

Only 7Gb free?
Do yourself a favour and cleanup some more space. Around 20-25Gb free, with a defrag, may bring a little speed back.

Andy.

Yes, that's a huge filesystem for a Windows based computer. A defrag on ME may not finish, even in safe mode. I think you can download the trial edition of diskkeeper to get the job done.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.
