System freeze in IE6 ...

I have installed Windows ME on my little Frankenstein Machine (PIII 500MHz, 256 RAM), and it was all going brilliantly until a couple of weeks ago.

I'm still building my software collection, so I can't pinpoint it to something I installed, but I am now experiencing system freezes during IE6 usage - the only other program that seems to cause a freeze is Adobe's Photo Album 2.0.

The irritating thing is that I don't know what's CAUSING the freeze - I have just stopped using Photo Album, but I can't very well stop using IE6! I'll be motoring along fine one minute, and the next the system has frozen - no mouse movement, no keyboard contact (so I can't even CTRL ALT DEL) ... just dead in the water.

I have installed all the updates from Microsoft for IE6 and the OS - I'm at the end of my rope. Does anyone have any clues as to what might be going on, or can anyone suggest any monitoring software that might be useful in recording what happens leading up to a freeze?

I'd really appreciate any help with this.

I suspect spyware, since this is all I see nowadays...

Download both spybot and ad-aware. Update them, then scan.

When done with one scanning, empty the recovery/quarantine area, then scan with the other. Otherwise, they'll both keep finding the same problems in each other's quarantine.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Thanks for the reply ... I actually try to keep tabs on adware and spyware, so it's neither of these. However, after sifting thru all the other posts I discovered the 'How to run Windows ME well' page, and after implementing the advice there I've not had any freezes since (fingers crossed!).

Cheers for the advice.
