I'm running Win XP Pro. I currently have almost 600 fonts installed. Is there a maximum I can safely install before I start having any problems.

Well you should maybe ask that question in the XP forum.
As it has nothing to do with hardware.

I know of no quantity limit but the more you have installed the more resources they consume as they must initialize upon boot up. More memory always assists in these circumstances.
