System Config Corrupt

I have a Win Xp Laptop that when it starts I get an error.

Windows could not start becuase the following file is either missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system

My questin is can i copy the system file from another laptop similar in hardware to this one?

If not any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

windows\system32\config\system" is the location of one of your major registry hives. It is not the type of file which can be imported from any other machine. The procedures outlined in "erikhertzel's" post, and the easier understood version below, are the only repair options available to you, other than restoring from any backup you may have or repairing Windows itself.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Before the Microsoft support info became common knowledge I have tryed the repair install and never had any luck since the Registry is not changed in a repair install. I have used the

info a couple of time and it always worked. I have used Bert Pe to copy and rename the files for a restore point 5 or 6 times and I always had good luck. So if you don't have a copy of Bert Pe useing the Recovery Console is the next best way. The Recovery Console is a pain to use but moveing the files with Bert Pe or the Recovery Console in my experiences it is the only way that works or you can format and reinstall.
