Since a few days, just on one computer, the system clock/date jumps back to 20 september 2003.

Where do I have to look to find out what the cause is ?

Win XP, no connection to the internet.
No programs installed for the last three months.

Could it be the powersupply ?

Might be the CMOS battery, if you are unplugging it, or it's losing power. They are not expensive to replace

Hmmm, the forgotten little piece...thanks to remind me...

dglienna, it is a Dell computer.

Are those batteries not fix on the motherboard ?

I remember several years ago with my first Dell, it was impossible to remove them wihout damaging the motherboard...

CMOS batteries are easily replaceable these days (or on a 2003 PC), they just pop right out.

Another thought, batteries are not always at fault in these cases. First, disable APM (Auto Power management) in BIOS, then disable any screen savers, utilities or virus scanners (you mentioned the machine is not Internet connected) that use the Windows scheduling service. If these efforts solve the problem, add them back in one at a time to find the culprit.

Once the PC is running the battery has no effect on the system (or shall I say shouldn't, there's an exception to every rule) , so if the PC's not being restarted all the time look into these options.

Try the battery then might update the bios. Make sure read up on the bios updates before you do it. It's worth a shot.

If you turn the PC off and then on does it go back to the default time? if it does,it's the battery.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.
