System Acting Strange After Microsoft Update 2

I couldn't find a WinXP Home thread, so I'm posting here. I just downloaded and installed some updates from Microsoft. I got the little yellow shield down by the clock telling me I had updates, so I clicked it and they downloaded. I restarted the computer and the POST screen just hung there. Finally I turned the computer off and back on again. The POST screen just hung there again, so I waited. It took five and a half minutes to get to the desktop.

I was wondering what I should do? I recently did a System Restore and that turned out badly, so I'm real hesitant to do another (I lost a lot of my files which I could never recover again).

1. it sounds like it is searching for Network Drives, try turning that option off...

2. also the Windows Imaging Assistant Service (WIA) may be taking the time to come up... Turn the Service to Manual...

3. could also be a problem with the TCP/IP stack, ergo looking for a IP number... Set it to Static, Fixed instead of Dynamic...

If you don't wish to try System Restore (Automatic restore points are created by each Windows Update), you can uninstall individual updates from Add or Remove in the Control Panel (the Show Updates box needs to be checked).

Have you tried Safe Mode?

It seems to have fixed itself. It's booting normally now. Weird. Anywho, thanks for the replies.

Let me rephrase that ... it's not taking as long to boot, but it still hangs a little longer than it used to. Could it be because of the cold? It has been really cold here, in the single digits.

How is it running once booted? Have you tried Safe Mode?

I can't say whether extreme cold could be the problem, you could give it a hot water bottle or electric blanket to see if it makes it happy (humor)?

XP Home - Suddenly Very Slow Boot
thread779-844710

References to Bootvis in the above thread probably should be ignored as it is an older superseded tool which should only be run (if it is still available?) as a extreme last resort.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

I didn't do safe mode because like I said it seems to have stabilized. That unsigned device driver tool is cool, thanks for the link on that. It found 1,946 unsigned files. I'm not sure what they all mean, but I have the logfile saved if anyone would like to take a look at it.

Sorry, the SVR found 288 files - 274 are signed, and 14 are not.

reread the above post that I had posted... those are the normal issues related to a slow boot up process...

mostlikely what had happened at first was that after the Updates from MS, the system Indexing and Prefetching or System Restore took over and updated its files/indexes of the newer versions...

Also a note: unsigned drivers do not necessarily mean bad drivers, it just means that they did not go through the MS Checking... but usually, if drivers become corrupt it should be the first place to check...

also take heed to what Linney mentioned about SFC /SCANNOW, as this checks your SYSTEM FILES for corruption and updates certain areas of the OS (backups of system files)...

Ben, thanks for pointing that out (Sfc /Scannow). I didn't even notice that when I read linney's post. Linney thank you as well for the great info. I ran the Sfc /Scannow and I had to insert my WinXP CD (man my Lite-On is getting loud, lol). Nothing popped up so I guess it went OK.

Thanls again for your help.

Always glad to help...

and another note on the side:

Linney is one of the TopNotch peeps here onboard, I've learned alot from him, and he usually always has those links on par...
