What are your thoughts on the Symantec/Veritas merger. What do you forsee as far as licensing and future product versions?

What I think most about is new productversions.

We have had 13 Raptor firewalls for years.
Since Raptor became a Symantec product (Now called Symantec Enterprise Firewall) 4-5 years ago nothing realy has happend with that product.

5 years ago Raptor was the best firewall money could buy.
Now it's just tailing 4 years behind Checkpoint.

And our last Raptor will be gone in less then 6 months replaces by a Nokia cluster or a cluster based on CheckPoint's secure platform.

So I will follow Netbackup very very close over the next 1-2 years so that we will have a migrationplan in place if nothing real is going to happen with Netbackup too.

The death of Netbackup!

The accquisition of Veritas by Symantec ist the death of Netbackup as of all other Veritas products. Just have a look at other products Symantec has swallowed:

Norton Commander:
It was a popular and leading file manager. After Symntec had swallowed it, soon it was not the best anymore and after a while one of the worst. Today Norton Commander it is hardly known anymore.

Norton Utilities:
It was a popular and leading set of repair and recovery tools. After Symntec had swallowed it, soon it was not the best anymore and after a while one of the worst. Today Norton utilities are hardly known anymore.

Norton Antivirus:
Still very wide spread due to free propaganda from various PC Magazines for its colorful user interface. But in antivirus expert reviews it is often critisiced as a nightmare:
- Updates are often late, which exposes its users to new viruses.
- The suite ist extremly large and installs a hell of 3 services which use up a lot of performance.
- Compatibility problems often occur.
- Uninstallation often does not work properly.
- Updates are huge and bulky.

Norton Ghost Disk Imgaing:
Ghost Disk imaging is extremly outdated. Acronis and Powerquest have developed much better tools. That's why Symantec has purchsed Powerquest.

The point is that Symantec is NOT a technology company! Symantec is just a lousy marketing company which sucks out the profit of any products it swallows without investing anything in any significant development.

There is no Symantec product on the market which has a leading position. Symantec is all about how to suck the maximum money from its customers without returning anything back.

I deeply regret the death of Netbackup in the throat of Symantec.
