I have an application server (HPUX 11.11) running SAN Media Server with a fibre attached 4 drive library backing up flat files and Sybase DBs. My problem is with performing Striped Sybase backups. I have a 3 Sybase DBs which are large enough to warrant a Sybase Striped backup. I have created a NetBackup Sybase Policy for each Sybase DB which requires a striped backup. The DBA in creating the backup script on the client has configured the backups to create 4 stripes. I find myself having to estimate the backup time for each striped backup and leaving time between each before starting the next Policy. If I do not spread out the backups, multiple Policies with striped backups start concurrently; neither Policy is able to obtain enough tape drive resources, resulting in each Policy failing. I really don't want to MPX and pay the penalty should I have to restore, and dedicating a DSSU is really not an option.
Has anyone found a means of queueing Sybase Policies with multiple stripes in a way such that they execute by priority as resources are freed up (again observing priority/queueing order)? Spreading out the Striped backups over time requires a lot of care and feeding, and of course I want to get the maximum utilization from the tape library.
Thank you in advance for your help!
The issue is limited to multi-striped backups only. Policies with a Sybase DB, requiring a single strips work fine.
