I have two servers running Windows 2000 Server. The main server is our file server. The other server is our exchange server. I have loaded exchange on the main server and I want to move all the exchange stuff to the main server, eliminating the need for the seperate exchange server. What would it take to make this happen.

CMan,

As Exchange 2000 info is mainly loaded from Active Directory (mailboxes,...) you have to make sure that your main server has AD installed (Active Directory, DNS,...)

When this is OK, move the \mdbdata folder from the exchange server to the main server in the same directory and try to mount your databases. It is possible you have to change the path in your Exchange Admin (right click on the Public and Private store and change the path)

If the databases do not mount, remove the log-files (EDBxxxx) from the \mdbdata-folder, run ESEUTIL /P on each database (=repair utility from Microsoft) and than try to mount the databases again.

When there are some issues left, feel free to post them again in this forum and I'll do my best to answer them.

Regards,

Peter

Interesting that you are doing this, mind if I ask why?
I am currently going in the opposite direction. My reason is to be able to do maintanence on the server without having to take down both services (email and file serving).

This could be quite useful for a disaster recovery where you are using a limited number of boxes. Are there any detailed steps for DR?

As long as both of your servers are in the active directory, all you need to do is go to Active Directory Users and Computers. Highlight the users that you wish to move to the other exchange server. Right click and go to All Tasks and select Exchange Tasks. When Exchange Tasks come up say next and then pick Move Mailboxes. Next select the main server mail store. Now the server will move all mail boxes to the main server. Have done this before and it works great. Users didn't even notice. Would recommend doing with the users out of exchange.

Hope this helps,

JK

Indeed I would agree with jkeduhsd's method of moving via ADUC. The previous method described of moving the mdbdata folder will work, but I would not recommend using the /p switch on eseutil.

This is for disaster recovery, a hard one recovery infact, and data can be lost doing this, bearing in mind a full offline defrag and isinteg are needed after a hard recovery.

Another option would be to restore from a backup but to another server, last time I checked this wasnt possible but this is something I would also be very interested in

Just wondering if any of you folks know of a way that 2 excahgne 2k server running on dc's with ad installed can replicate mailboxes automatically?

I'm having to move our E2K server to a new server because we need the hardware that our current e2k server is installed on for other uses. As far as moving the mailboxes i understand that..but don't you have to visit each pc and change the outlook profile? My thorn in the rear is this fax program called faxination...not looking forward to moving that!
