I know this is the Cisco forums but I hope some answers come.

Looking to replace the Dell switches we bought last year (they are crap, going to sell them on eBay I think).

I need a solid 48 port backbone switch with a couple of GBICs. Then some additional 48 port 10/100 or 10/100/1000 (if I can fit it in the budget). The core is key though.

Well it depends on if you want to just have L2 technology in the core or if you want to go L3. That depends on the price difference. Either way I'd suggest a Catalyst 3650 switch. It's 48 ports 10/100 (in-line power) with 4 LC GBIC ports. If you'd like to do more research on this switch, you can find it here:

CORE - 4507 or 4510 (if you can afford it)
CORE - 3750 (cheaper, pretty good but still expensive)
3550 - More of an edge switch, but should be pretty good for a small datacenter

2950 - If you only need layer2 and have a small datacenter.

Cisco just came out with the catalyst 4948 switches. Its essentially a 4 gbic sfp + 48 10/100/1000 switch with SupV engine in for around 12k. one kick $%# switch if you ask me. Either that or the 3750 would be my go for a L3 backbone switch.

2970s are awesome L2 switches with optional sfp gbics and run around 5 k.

here is the 4948

hmm... I like the hotswapable power supplies, but what's up w/ this....

"The Cisco Catalyst 4948 has 52 physical switching ports (48 10/100/1000 and 4 SFP) on the front panel. Up to 48 of these ports can be active at one time in any combination."

Man... spend 12k on a switch and can't even use everything on it. :(

Also, no 10gb ports or 16gb uplink for connectivity to the 3750.
