Hi,

i need a good 24port managed switch with gigabit and stacking capability.
have heard cisco 2924? is a good model
am in UK and have 500 UK quids to spend.
any recomendations

this is a backbone switch for a network of 100 local users and 7 site vpn
...to begin with, will probably use netgear 24port unmanaged for rest of ports

use a nortel Baystack 450/24 .... you can buy refurbed for less than what you have to spend. I know it is a Cisco forum, but that is my opinion

cisco 2950 series is probably the cheapest way to go , 2924's are end of life which means they are no longer selling brand new ones, I'm sure you can buy them on the refurb market .

If it's a core switch... Go w/ a 3550 or 3750, then use 2950s for the rest in your stack.

Look into the new HP ProCurve 2650. It gives you FAR more features than the 2950 and you can get a 48-port version with gigabit uplink ports for around $900-$1000.

It's worth looking into, at least. It supports Cisco Fast Etherchannel, CDP, and TACACS+. It comes with SSH v2 support, SNMP v3, IGMP v3, GVRP, RADIUS, 802.1x, Rapid STP, Auto MDI-X on all ports, port security, CoS and traffic prioritization, etc.

In other words: gobs of features, low price. :)
