SVGA Video Drivers

Hi,

I've just installed a new video card - AGP - but at the moment I can't find the disc/CD which came with it for drivers.

It's defaulted to the Windows VGA one, which only gives me 600 x 480 and 16 colours (useless !!). Rather than the SVGA one. I'm sure Windows comes with a default SVGA driver as I've used it before, but I'm at a loss to find it.

Please can you help me urgently, as I need to get my friend up and running very, very quickly !

What's the make and model of video card? You should be able to download the appropriate drivers for it.

Hi,

It's a INNO 3D but also has Savage written on it.

I thought that there was an SVGA driver (as well as VGA) built into Windows 98 you could use whatever the card was - is there ?

Most of the Inno 3d cards seem to be based around the NVidia GeForce range, so you could also try the NVidia Detonator drivers which work with all of them
from

http://www.nvidia.com.

However, a company called S3 used to make a graphics chip called the Savage - a basic chip, nothing fancy, but it is incompatible with the Nvidia range, so I would need to be more certain before downloading the appropriate drivers.

The trouble with modern graphics cards is they are so complicated, that anything much more than standard VGA or basic SVGA needs drivers optimised for the chip on the card to make the most of it.
You could also try running Aida32 (

http://www.aida32.hu)

or Belarc Advisor (

http://www.belarc.com)

on the machine to see if it can positively identify the graphics card's exact model, and therefore the appropriate drivers to download.

I've been doing some strange things with Win95B recently.

At least there I have the use of a 16-color SVGA driver that seems very, very generic. It was listed with the other generic drivers including XGA (which died miserably with the video hardware I was using). It is even possible to force this to be the default driver upon install via an OEM custom MSBATCH.INF file to drive Win95 Setup (

display=svga

in the

[SYSTEM]

section).

I'd think Win98 would have basically the same SVGA driver I found.


Here's where I see it on a functioning Win95B system:

Go into Display Properties, click the Advanced button, and on the Adapter tab panel click the Change... button.

Look in the Select Device dialog that pops up, click on the Show All Devices radio button. The adapter listbox will change to two side-by-side listboxes.

Under Manufacturers look for

(Standard display types)

and click on it, then to the right under Models there is a list of standard adapter types, including

Super VGA

.


I hope this helps, I don't have a running Win98 machine here to check right now.
