I have several pc's which all of a sudden are just slowed down completely.
When looking at he task manager i see that svchost.exe is eating all the memory and cpu until the pc halts.
I have run spyware removal and McAfee AV but it only goes back to normal for few hours.
I notice by unplugging the network cable at least gives the to opportunity to scan the computer.

This is a problem when auto updates run. I have seen it many times. MS has an artical about it I just don't have the number here handy. A google search will get it though.

It might be a virus/spyware. Check where svchost.exe is located. If it's in C:\Windows, it's a virus and should be deleted. The real file should be installed to C:\Windows\System32

Today i have had several pc's with svchost.exe running at 100%. PC's came to a complete stop.I have about 2 minutes before svchost destroys the pc.
Our pc's belong to a SBS 2003 domain with WSUS configured.
When i run McAfee AV and spyware removal software it doesn't pickup anything.
Svchost.exe just keeps on running at 100%.
What is causing this? I have tried some other task manager software etc but still i have solution.
I had about 5 pc's in two days time having this problem so surely something strange is going on.
Your help or advice will be most welcome.

Must i disable the Automatic update service on all pc's?
Our pc's receive updates from WSUS server and have been configured with GPO to connect to WSUS for updates.
How will this affect my current setup.

Hi,

I had this exact scenario and I disabled Auto Updates on the client machines and server. I have not had chance to revisit yet but I know it is something to do with SUS.

Thanks.

maya14,

"Must i disable the Automatic update service on all pc's?"

Any disabling would only be very temporary if you are following any of my posted suggestions. Any computer having the problem would require the suggested treatment.

Perhaps you intended your question for someone else's suggestion?

Ok i have tried everyone's advice but it seems that disabling Automatic Updates solved the problem.
So much for setting up WSUS for automatic updates.

Well

As Sleepalot stated, there is an update out there, you may have to install it manually. Once you install the update, you should be able to use your WSUS.

I have fixed this problem and posted the solution on my blog. It requires downloading a patch and also updting to version 3.0 of the Windows Update Agent.
