Ok, I posted this in the 2k professional forum, with no responses, so Ill try here...
Heres the deal, I had a w2k sp3 machine, member of a 2000 AD domain, with 2 NICs in it. 1 is integrated, 3com, and one was add-on Belkin/Realtek (model 8139). I had to have these clients multihomed, due to our network configuration.
Anyway, I reconfigured our network to 1 subnet, so I removed the Belkin/Realtek NIC. I uninstalled it from device manager, and powered down to remove the card.
When the system came back up, I see that its VERY slow, I check task manager, and it shows SVCHOST.EXE hogging all the CPU time, at 100%.
I check event viewer for clues, and I see this:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000
Date: 1/19/2003
Time: 02:53:02
User: N/A
Computer: xxxxxxxxx
Description:
The Realtek RTL8139-based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter NT Driver service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
Eventid.net says:
"The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it." - In my case this (the Sentinel service) was caused by a device driver that required a specific hardware attached to the system. Also it could have been solved by obtaining the latest driver from the manufacturer.
Ive tried to reinstall the card, and reinstall the drivers (including new ones), it does this while the drivers are installed, and when theyre "not installed".
I tried to search the registry for references to this, and remove them all, but some it would not allow me to remove, stating "access denied".
I cant find this "Realtek RTL8139-based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter NT Driver service" in "Services" anywhere, to disable it...
Initially, I thought that the driver failed to completely uninstall, and was looking for hardware that wasnt there. But I put the hardware back in (in the same PCI slot), and reinstalled the drivers, and its still doing this with SVCHOST.
Is there any way to fix this?
Am I forced to do a reinstall of the OS?
Will a simple reinstall/repair do it?
All assistance is appreciated.
