Got a problem with Microsoft SUS. We just installed it to update our windows 2000 PC's from the LAN. Can anyone help.

We don't have AD here, so have had to enter registry settings to connect clients to the SUS server to recieve windows updates.. The clients connect ok, and they recieve notification that updates are ready to download. You then click the icon to recieve a list of updates that are needed which is fine. When I click "Start Download" button the window disappears and nothing happens. Any ideas?

Check for software restriction policy is enabled. Check for GP settings regarding Autoupdates.

Thanks,

We don't have group policy because we are on an NT domain.
I checked the local policy of the PC, but no restictions there. Autoupdates work fine from the microsoft site but not from the local LAN SUS server.

Hmmm... it's one more thing:
try to add an fqdn of your sus server to the INTRANET Security zone on each desktop...

Still can't get this working. Tried the intranet sites thing to.

Question, does the SUS server need to be in the office domain? currently it is on the same subnet but not joined the domain.

cheers

Yes, I definitely would recommend you to join this server to the domain.

Found the source of the problem. It was because of a netbios name resolution problem. cteated an lmhost file entry pointing to the SUS server, then the downloads and installations proceed as expected.
Once the server has determind what installtions are required it send a netbios name/path to get the downloads to the client. if the client cannot resolve this netbios name the process will stop and no download will take place, thanks for your help,

Mike
