Is there anyway to have the SUS clients pull its updates from an SMS server instead of an SUS server??

No...SMS SUS is a totally different animal.

Since SMS uses the SUS update engine, I thought that it might be possible.
true but SMS SUS relies on the SMS client and has no knowledge of the built in Windows Update SUS.
