I just glimpsed the quark.com site and saw a preview of Quark 6. I have also viewed a pre-release version of Quark 6 for OSX - - which was by no means impressive. Quark 6 only seems to provide OSX compatibility and a few cross-media (XML/HTML) functions.

So - - I was curious. How many out there plan to move to Q6? Why? What version are you on now?

The whole issue with Quark confuses me. I understand why so many designers and printers use it as it has been so tightly integrated into their workflows. But if each new release of Quark requires an upgrade of third party Xtensions, why upgrade when something like InDesign is out there? The functions of Quark 6 do not even compare to InDesign 2 (now a year old). How will they market Q6 when ID3 comes out later this year?

By the time Q6 comes out, I'd like to think I'll have moved over to ID almost completely. OK, I'm probably being a bit optimistic, but Quark really shouldn't be as popular as it is. I started a new company over a year ago and bought Quark 5. It wasn't OSX ready, but I figured they'd have a patch within a few months. Now it looks like I'll have to wait quite a bit longer and pay for a whole new upgrade.

I also bought the Adobe Design Collection. Again I was a little disappointed because I didn't get the most up-to-date versions of the various apps. When I asked Adobe about this, they said that the bundle deals were a little behind the standalone products, but they took my details and posted out the upgrades as soon as they were available. Free of charge.

Leaving aside the feature comparisons of the two programs (which I completely agree with you on), I think this shows just how seriously Adobe take their customers. When ID3 becomes available, I'll upgrade without a doubt. Quark 6? Even my printer hasn't upgraded since QX4, so what's the point? Besides, the stuff in version 5 that I was most interested in (XML support) doesn't even work as described in the manual! I hope that Quark do suprise us all with this new release, but I won't hold my breath...
