Can you install Windows Server 2003 TS CALs on a license server running Windows 2000?

- or -

Can I have Windows Server 2003 Terminal Servers in my environment without a Windows Server 2003 license server?

Thanks.

Hi fraustbyte

Unfortunately No

Note. The people at microsoft who you may speak to when installing the license packs are different from those that actually "support" terminal services. The license pack personnel's solution to this dilema is to make the 2003 terminal server or another 2003 server the license server. This may or may not work. It did not work when I tried it. In a later call to the MS Terminal Services support they contradicted what the license pack support people said, saying it was not feasable to use the same server.

Not sure what you're saying here...it is possible to install TS licensing on the same machine running terminal services.

yes it is possible. however what he is speaking of is the fact that is not recommended. problems arising frm it are also not looked into too deeply due to it not actally being a supported configuration due to known issues. they will look at it however...i looked at many myself. But the TS Licensing server should be separated from teh terminal server if at all possible, and you will be told this by anybody in the LC, NC, or Redmond sites. Not to mention most people do not know the appropriate reg keys to use to make a member server a TS Licensing server. If this is not done, your licenses will not be renewed.

the answers above are correct though...no you cannot have 2003 terminal servers without a 2003 license server; and no, you cannot install windows 200 CALs onto a win2000 ts license server.

keep in mind too....ts licensing server in 2003 does NOT have to be on a DC.

almost got a paragraph there :)

Hmm, when I was in NC, I told a few people that it was ok to run a TSL on their TS. I wasn't aware that was an unsupported config.

well its not unsupported...but it is not supposed to be done. if a licensing issue cannot be resolved and ts licensing is installed onto a terminal server. the recommendation is always to remove ts licensing from the terminal server and let them know that ts licensing should not be put onto a terminal server.

you were in nc. DS team?

I was team mentor for silver team (if they even still do that) on DS in LC.

Yep, I was on DS in NC. They were just starting the gold silver bronze thing when I left.

Now I'm with Premier in DC.

Looks like the following posts explained what I was trying to. Basically 2 groups at MS one saying yes you can do this the other saying no you can't (or shouldn't).

If you got it working right on, nice job. I couldn't get it to hand out licenses correctly. I chalked it up to "that's what I get for trying to take shortcuts and save some money".
