Hi All,

I have an old Cisco 5002 that used to have a Sup2 and a 12-port Eth blade sitting around - I used it a few years ago to learn the basics of CatOS, however I wanted to have another fiddle, but using a newer OS and hardware, so I picked up a Sup3-GE (2x GE-SX ports) and a 5225R blade (24port). The supervisor boots without issue in the chassis, all green lights a plenty on both the Sup and Sw blade, but unfortunately I cannot get anything from the console port - I have checked the cable (standard cisco moulded), which is working fine. I have some other Cisco kit I tried the cable on.

I have tried every possible combination of baud rates, flow control and even tried changing the 8,n,1 default stop bits, data bits and parity etc - all to no avail. I also tried the same with the Aux port and the same - just in case.

I checked the pins in both RJ45 ports (console and aux) and they look fine - the board itself looks fine too, no obvious faults etc.

I can't get anything from the console at all, during bootup or once booted, very strange - I am guessing either the port has been changed to SLIP - but even so, I should still be able to issue modem commands by the console.

Do you think the console port is fried or perhaps locked out? If the latter, is there any way to unlock the console port - never heard of it being done before as would be a pretty silly thing to do, if it were possible. Shame as I bought both off ebay as working, but although I did some basic testing once I got them (powered on and since they booted without issue I assumed they worked fine, so left positive feedback and removed the auctions from my won list etc).

Thank you for your help!

The old cat 5000's do use the standard console cable , use a straight thru cable to get it to work .

The old cat 5000's do "NOT" use the standard console cable , use a straight thru cable to get it to work .

Hmm, thanx for the advice - I thought being an RJ45 connector they would be "cisco standard". The Sup2's I used to use had a DB25 to RJ45 adapter - I am guessing then that this adapter adjusted the wiring - I think I have a DB9 to RJ45 adapter somewhere and will give that a try with a standard RJ45 sraight-thru cable.

Thanx!

Thats exactly what you need a db9 to rj45 then with a straight thru and I bet it works ....

Yeeha, got it working - the DB9 to RJ45 converter didn't work, so I pulled out my trusty RS232 conversion kit, bit of a temp install, but it goes USB > Serial (DB9) > DB9 to DB25 > DB25F to DB25F > RS232 LED Tester > DB25 to RJ45 > RJ45 to Cisco :) A bit crazy, but at least it works!
