While attempting to reinstall windows 98 SE everything starts out ok, but then just as things are starting to copy, I get this error message SUO409 Windows was unable to update your system files, may be caused by virus detect built into your system, or virus detection software running. In Bios virus detect is disabled. I put a rem in front of everything in config.sys leaving only himem.sys, emm386, dos high and dos umb.
Seems no matter what I do I keep geting this error. Can anyone steer me in the right direction as to what to do to get win98 to load properly. I have no idea as to where else to look, nor what else to turn off. This has been an ongoing exersize in futility for the last week or so, and am losing what little hair I have left. lol I have been to microsoft self help and knowledge but could not find a straight answer to my question.
Thanks,
RIC HINTZ

Hello, GUTTZILLA.

MSKB article Q129971.

[1] /Quote/ Warning SU0409
Windows Setup was unable to update your system files. This may be caused by virus detection that is built in to your computer, or by virus detection software running on your computer. To disable built in virus detection, you will need to run the configuration program that came with your computer, or contact your computer's manufacturer. To disable virus- detection software running on your computer, you may need to remove the lines that start the program from your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files. After you have disabled the virus detection, restart your computer, and then run Setup again. /Unquote/

[2] /Quote/ You may receive this error message if the WildFile Inc. GoBack program is installed on your computer. It is recommended that you disable the program before you proceed with Setup./Unquote/

You seem to have done something in this direction, so make sure again to check if GoBack-type software is installed.

Tsuji,
Just wanted to let you know that you solved my problem. Yes I had GoBack installed and as soon as I disabled it win98 loaded just fine. I had submitted this question to I don't know maybe 10 other people at different tech centers and while they were all nice enough to answer back, no one but you mentioned anything about Go Back. How did you know to disable it to make loading win 98 work? Just curious I searched the microsoft knowledge data base but I found no refrence to it there. Anyway, Thanks again your are truly a gentleman and a scholar. (sorry not sure of the spelling)
