I am an analyst in a medical facility trying to get stats on physicians. I am trying to sum readmissions by quarter. The indicator is a numeric field yet when I try to summarize it will not allow me. I can count, average, max,etc but no sum.. I am trying to get the top 5 docs by volume. Any ideas??

What does Crystal see it as, that's the important thing. Right click the field and select browse data, it will show you it's dataq type as Crystal sees it.

If it states that it's a Number (not numeric), than you can sum it.

You don't state where you're trying to perform a sum, nor how, so please post specifics.

You can try a formula such as:

sum({table.field})

If that fails, try:

sum(val({table.field}))

If that works, Crystal doesn't see it as a number.

Then if you need a sum at a group level, try:

sum(val({table.field}),{table.groupfield})

This should help you diagnose it, if not, please post what you're trying and where as there are several ways to build a Sum in Crystal.
