We are running a Pervasive 8 database on our network. The way the db is written causes tons of network traffic that creates bottlenecks and slows down the network for all users.

I was thinking of putting the db on it's own subnet. First of all, would this work? Second, can someone walk me through how to go about doing this? I can run a basic network with no problem, but when it comes to normal deviations, then I still have a lot to learn.

Please feel free to email me with any ideas, suggestions or help. Thank you.

Ok, what kind of Network traffic is it? Broadcasts? if it is then yes it will help, If it's just throwing a ton of data at the PC's and it saturates the NIC then it won't help. In general what is the Network infrastructure? ie Hubs, switches 10Mb 100Mb?

this info will help

We are running unmanaged switches for the network. All of the servers are on gigabit switches with gigabit nics.

The way the database is set up, it does all the processing on the local computers...that means that when someone wants to retrieve information, the entire table is pulled to the PC which then parses it. This is what is creating just a ton of network clutter. The other issue we are dealing with, is anytime we do certain tasks on the database such as running updates, backups etc...it brings the network to a crawl.

I hope this info helped. If not, keep asking questions and I will get answers.

So what I would do is find out exactly where the bottle neck is. Subnetting won't help, unfortunately. Ideally, it would be nice if the DB only sent the information necessary to the client PC. Since this isn't the case, I would check bandwidth utilization at the following locations DB server side, PC side and any links that run between the to. Also, one thing that will help, where ever possible hardset the NICs and Ports to 100Full Duplex, don't trust auto negotiatation. Also check CPU and Memory load on the DBserver.
[cheers] and let me know if you need further assistance.
