I am teaching myself about TCP/IP and am interested in purchasing a router to practice setting up DNS, DHCP, NAT, etc. I have five PCs that will be running Windows NT/2000/XP as well as Linux. I really want to get more of a visual sense of implementing these various protocols on different platforms. What I would like to know is does anyone know of a good Linksys router that would allow me to accomplish this?

They all offer DHCP and NAT. The WRT54G with a public release of Sveasoft firmware would give you some semblance of DNS.

Rather than use a router implementation, consider downloading the free trial of Windows 2003 Server and configuring all the services manually:

minwage,

Sorry I do not have a Linksys router that I would want to use for this. But........

You might want to look at a Linux router or a Linux router/Firewall.

All you need is an older PC and 2-3 nics and the right Linux OS, I am using IP Cop ( ) and it has a nice web-based management screen so I can work with DHCP, NAT, DNS, firewall issues, intrusions etc. and it makes a GREAT firewall. Best part - it is a FREE download!!

I am using it in my home network lab with 3 Cisco hubs and 11 PCs running every flavor of Windows and Linux.

All you need is an older - dedicated PC.

Go to and check it out!

Just a thought!
