Stucked in safe mode

I've been troubleshooting XP due to shutdown problems, system restore did not work. I tired to isolate problem by going to "diagnostic startup" in msconfig, then "selective startup".... now I'm stucked in safe mode. Setting back to "normal startup" doesnt work. Suggestions anyone?

yes, two...

1.) run from SafetyMode, in a DOS window, the command: SFC /scannow Make sure that you have the XP CD at your ready...

2.) do a Repair Install...

From safe mode Click on Start > Click on Run > Type msconfig > Click on OK


In the General Tab - Startup selection should be set to "Normal Startup"


In the Boot.ini Tab - You will have at least one line that looks like this
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="Windows Xp Professional"

Hilight each one in turn and make sure that none of the tickboxs have been ticked.

Thank you for the responses. I think the culprit may be the "sasser worm" and some other type of malicious programs. The stinger anti-virus seem to pick it up and appears to delete, but it sees to regenerate next boot-up. It wont allow Norton anti-virus installation. The first syptom was windows wont sutdown, then I'm unable to get out of safe mode, now windows tries to shutdown in 50 seconds. Anyway, I think i'ts time for a new hard drive anyway.

If it's regenerating it's comming from the system restore. You will need to shut that off then clean the system. When it's all clean you can turn it back on.
