I read an article about striping your tapes before you use them to have a continuos timecode.
I am using Premiere Pro and have tried this with my firewire connected and the camera in play mode.
Then in Premiere Pro dragging the color bars to the timeline then scrub across the color bars and they are displayed on the camera screen.
Then I press the camera record button.
The camera screen now displays the message DV-IN then I leave it so that the whole tape records.
Then when I play the tape back the color bars are displayed for 30 seconds then black for the rest of the tape.
I was under the impression that the color bars would be recorded throughout the whole tape.
Any help on this appreciated.

It wouldn't. As we call it, blacking the tape as well, you're just laying down a temporary track on the tape so that when you are doing synchs between your camera and the computer (or in straight analog editing between two decks) the comptuer can read the track for the right times. A blank spot (no signal recorded) will cause your tapes to be mistimed or unsynched.

The "black" is normal.
