Streaming Media causes Error?

Hi again, whenever I open a streaming media file (e.g. by clicking a link on the internet), I get the nice new IE Window appear, with the embedded WMP thing, and a nice advert to the right...then when it says "Connecting to Media", I get a Fatal Error ("IE Must close, sorry for the inconvenience....would you like to send an error report?").

This happens on all accounts, and on various websites.

Is this a known problem with WMP?

P.S. I have Windows XP Pro SP2, IE6, WMP10.

MS just released a patch for WM10 to help in streaming problems. May help-may not, couldn't hurt!

I already have the newer version since I've reinstalled twice. That fix did not help, I'm afraid...

OK more strange happenings:

Now whenever a streaming media windows opens (IE Window with embedded WMP), it says "connecting to media...", then says "Ready". And it just stays like that. Clicking the 'Play' Button makes it flash something (probably connecting or opening or something - too fast to tell), then it goes back to saying "Ready", and the file does not play.

Can anyone figure out what's wrong and/or a solution when reinstalling WMP10 doesn't help?!

How long do you wait? I know that sometimes for me when it displays 'Ready' it is actually downloading the content. Maybe just give it a few minutes and see what happens. Try waiting without clicking play first, if that doesn't work, try clicking play once and then waiting.

does WMP work properly when run stand-alone as opposed to embedded within IE? In other words, click the media player icon under programs, and click one of the media links there, see what happens.

also, do other streaming media players (real player, quicktime, winamp) work properly?

you may want to run the system file checker "sfc /scannow" (do this only if you have the XP install cd available) and also maybe run the IEFix utility.

WMP plays mp3s and mepgs etc. fine, it's just streaming media. Haven't tried the other players yet, I will when I get home. I will also try your other suggestions and post back.

I know I've had trouble with certain sites before. Could you previously stream media from the site(s) in question?

Yes I could previously stream from these sites. I tried IEFix and it didn't work.

I also know what it briefly says before "Ready" - "Opening Media".

Any ideas?

see if media player started by itself, outside of IE, generates the same error as when in IE.

also, go to the event viewer and report any errors related to this problem listed there exactly as they are listed. thanks.

OK, I noticed that if I right-click in the video pane, and go to "Error Details", it says "The Specified Module cannot be found".

I also tried it in Firefox, with the same problem ("Ready" being displayed and nothing else).

No errors appear in the event viewer when it happens, although this may be connected, I don't know (it's the latest entry in the Event Logs):

I cannot test the streams in WMP as far as I know since they're all initiated via Javascript - they don't have a URL I can type in.

Ooooh...after looking up "The Specified Module cannot be found" on Google, I went to try some stuff, and during the course of trying stuff, I went to Tools -> Options then clicked on the Network Tab...but it didn't come up. Wheneve I click on it, the tabs flash for a second, then go back to the tab I was on...

ok, apparently a part of WMP is corrupted. will have to look up how to remove/repair it. will post back.

ok, regarding using media player on its own, you dont have to run that specific link. just start wmp, go to the media guide area, and see if you can run ~any~ streaming media link.

also, when you look at the details of the error message on that one link, does it show a C00xxxxx message or an 800xxxxx error message? If so, whats the exact number?

also, right click the my computer icon, select manage, then go to event viewer, then "application." look for any errors in there related to media player, and if they have a 800x or c00x error, post them here.

i am now starting to think its this specific media link, maybe not wmp itself. perhaps you need a codec of some sort for this one link.
