Hi again, whenever I open a streaming media file (e.g. by clicking a link on the internet), I get the nice new IE Window appear, with the embedded WMP thing, and a nice advert to the right...then when it says "Connecting to Media", I get a Fatal Error ("IE Must close, sorry for the inconvenience....would you like to send an error report?").

This happens on all accounts, and on various websites.

Is this a known problem with WMP?

P.S. I have Windows XP Pro SP2, IE6, WMP10.

I'm not home right now but will be soon.

It can't be that I need a codec surely - it worked before..

But I will try when I get home.

Right. When I open a link in Media Guide, I get one of 2 Errors:

- The Specified Module cannot be found
or
- WMP cannot play any of the items in the Playlist

When it says "The Specified Module cannot be found", there is no Error Number, but if I click "Web Help", then the page tells me that "You've encountered Error 8007007E when using Windows Media Player".

The Error does not appear in Event Viewer. This test was done at 23:23, and the last Error Report was 15:34. There are also no mentions of Windows Media Player or "8007007E" in Event Viewer.

Another interesting thing: If I try to stream a normal file (i.e. not an ASX/ASF Shortcut) like a WMV, it gives the same error...but if I download it THEN play it, it plays fine.

This information coupled with the fact that the Network Tab won't open in Tools->Options, indicates a Network problem that is effecting WMP...

Any help appreciated.

I fixed the Specified Module Cannot be Found problem - I was missing a dll ()

BUT, now the old problem of getting IE Fatal Errors when I open links is back!! (It says "Connecting to Media" then I get a Fatal Error "IE Must close, sorry for the inconvenience....would you like to send an error report?").

This is so annoying!!! I cannot see any fix since I've reinstalled everything to no avail!! Arggh!

I just tried a "sfc /scannow" and then reinstalled SP2. No effect.

Does reinstalling Windows seem like the only solution here?

i found this:

so maybe doublecheck all your drivers and run dxdiag. but the simplest answer probably is to reformat.

still looking for "manual removal and reinstallation" instructions re: wmp, but I am guessing they dont really exist :-(

Well I'll try reinstalling Sound Drivers - after that I see no alternative...

wish i could have been more help. just be sure to create system restore points or capture an image of your "clean" drive after reinstalling so it will be easier to revert in case anything like this ever happens again.
