Hi,

For some reason (stupidity I guess) I have upgraded my PC to Vista Ultimate 64bit, and I am having problems streaming music from a server. It will work for exactly 12 minutes then disconnect (in XP it works fine, so its not the server)

The stream is for realplayer but I have tried it with mplayer, which plays for 12 minutes and freezes (I have to end the process to exit the app.

I have searched the web, found that every one is complaining about realplayer but I have the same problem in mplayer. I have changed some power settings to see if Vista is just putting drivers to sleep... Also changed the network card settings, unticking "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"...

For reference my network card is an inbuilt one on a BFG 680i SLI mobo, and all drivers are up to date (64bit drivers for mobo and graphics devices)...

Does anyone have suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

It is not necessarily a Vista problem though either.

You say it works fine in XP - are you talking XP 32bit? If so, my bet is it is a problem with the software you are using running on a 64bit OS.

Thanks for your reply

Ok, I can see that it could be crashing when it requests more ram from the OS, as ram on a 64bit pc is referenced differently...

Do you happen to know of any 64bit streaming software?

I might put a request to the mplayer dev team to add this to their app.

Thanks again

Unfortnately, no I do not.

It was a long shot (and still may not even be correct), and just a common problem I've seen crop up when people switch to a 64bit platform.

Not a problem - I just hope you are able to actually resolve the issue.

Have you considered it being possibly related to faulty codecs, although why it would play for 12 minutes and stop is a bit baffling?

Have you tried cleaning out your Temporary Internet Files and running Disk Cleanup?

Vista Codec Package 4.5.0 Final (License: Freeware, Requires: NT/200x/XP/Vista)

Hi, thanks all

I didn't think about clearing temps because it is a brand new install, but I'll give it a go.

Just had an idea to try the web based player (flash).

Just a question, could it be a firewall or sockets problem? I'll try disabling that if the flash player doesn't work.

I've got some good codecs (I think, most probably is the problem) installed, so if all else fails I'll give that a go.

I do some programming and know of the 64bit memory problem, just thought that the devs would know it as well...

Thanks again

Well the web based player works, so I'm very confused. Unless it is a 64bit thing

I have seen this issue before on XP (32-bit) and Vista (32-bit). for some reason I don't think your issue is really an OS related issue.
I have not really delved into finding a fix for that issue as it only affects a satellite computer I am going to use in my shop.

Maybe I will have to look for the fix now...LOL

one thing to look at is it is working then shuts down. have you looked at the server end to see if it is using some type of limit in the network. Qos priority may help to manage the stream. is your network dropping on a 255 connect limit?
how about the network card? try another one to see if it is having issues.
what type of router are you using? is it the DHCP server or are you using server 2003?
could the two computers just be dropping and reseting their network every 12 minutes and when you run the stream it starts then drops because the network resets at the start of the stream then drops at 12 minutes.
try removing the router(you lose your internet with this test) and trying to stream without the router in play.

be interesting to see the results

Whilst looking into a slow network problem with this Vista PC (another known one) I found that Vista is using IPv4 & IPv6 at the same, so it is creating two requests for the same info from the server and when one is being return as failed (IPv6) it will send another request...

This could match up with your theory, the server could be disconnecting me because I cam creating too many requests.

I have now switched off IPv6 so I'll try the stream again.

And yes the net is a bit faster now I disabled IPv6...

Thanks again

firewolfrl, I did see these fixes whilst looking at the network speed thing, didn't install them.

Worth a shot: I have installed the patch and was very puzzled why I couldn't stream at all. Then found out that the site I normally use was down, lol

Testing on another, time will tell...

Thanks

Been streaming for an hour now without any problems. Success :-D

So, thanks firewolfrl

I would point out to people with the same problem, you get the patch from thehotfixshare and they require a login account to download patches. But it does work after.

Just to recap:

- Sign up to - Activate your account the usual way (email link)
- Search for 'KB931770' and it comes up with three items in the results
- Click on one of the bottom two that matches your system 32bit or 64bit (x32 or x64)
- Download the patch and install
- Open the CMD window using Admin rights (right click CMD and select 'Run as Admin...')
- Type (copy'n'paste) 'netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled' into the CMD window and press enter
- You should see 'Ok.' and you are all set

Thanks again to all who helped.

Me: 2, Vista: 9 (at the moment)

cjelec,
I went to the AMD/Microsoft seminar in Seattle, WA and talked to one of the main guys that is involved with Vista servicepack 1
if you go to the and download the hotfix Microsoft can't keep track of to hotfix and thus won't prepare it for the windows update site because the request is low.
This particular hotfix is not numbered to go to the windows update and may have a few more tweaks to it before it goes to servicepack 1. right now it has an issue of interfering with the update of the Microsoft NET.framework 1.1

You can get the fix at the and follow the online form to get the fix. so if they tweak it you will get the newer version

"To resolve this problem, submit a request to Microsoft Online Customer Services to obtain the hotfix. To submit an online request to obtain the hotfix, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
