I have been hit with a strange problem on a Win98 machine whereby i am unable to play *.wav files using windows media player. However, i am able to play other audio files with winmediaplayer and i am also able to play the same *.wav files with another player such as Winamp.

I have tried to reinstalled winmediaplayer and audio drivers but doesnt help. Suspected it could be something to do at the registry or win.ini file.

Can someone enlighten me what i should do next?

first;
go into WMP options and make sure it's set to play the Associated File type .WAV file (tick the box).
if no go
Right click on any WAV file while pressing and holding the SHIFT key...make sure the "Always open this file......." box is ticked, and scroll through the apps listed and choose WMP

The *.wav files are already been associated to WMP but the problem still persisted. Strange though...

Get yourself a good REG cleaner and run it after doing this;
Start > Run
Rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\WINDOWS\inf\wmp.inf,Uninstall

- use RegCleaner to find the wmp entries, and delete all of them.
- boot into safemode and then delete the C:\program file\windows media player folder.
- do a search for wmp files under all drives, and then delete all the related files.
- and last just install the WMP 9.0 back...
