I have found on my Netware 4.11 server, when a user closes out of server based files from a network drive, the server still shows they have them open. Even if the user shuts down and reboots. The server will show the files still open for hours. If the server reboots during this process, the files will be corrupted and have to restore or salvage. Most users can exit a file, and the server update right away. I haven't found any trends or patterns

Any ideas abou this?

What version of the Novell CLient are you running on the affected PCs? Also, what Service Pack is the server running?

Service Pack 9 is installed.

The Clients are 4.83 SP1, 4.71.2000..... and maybe a little older. Some users are logged in; and if your not logged in as administrator you can't see the client version.

You might want to try setting your client file cache to off

I shutdown the workstation its self. powered it off, but the file server still showed the files being open by that user for hours, until the server was taken down. which corrupted those files.

At the console, the SET parameters have "Communication Parameters". If you have set the watchdog packets and the delay before first dog packet to a high value to avoid un-necessary connection loss when the client is idle, your condition will happen.

You see, even after rebooting, the connection persists. Thats a good feature if you look at it as a way to restore a lost connection.

At the client end, the NET.CFG, set the DOS REQUESTOR PARAMETER "Auto reconnect" to "Off". The default is "On".

In your case, you should protect your server and go only for DOWN, EXIT sequence to shut down. ("...If the server reboots during this process, the files will be corrupted and have to restore or salvage ...").

End
