Hi
a) What you need....
1. Hub - Think of having a switch - these days they are more economical. Think of 100 speed.. Dont go for 10 speed Hub.
2. I raise a question if you need a Hub at all ????
If only you are thinking of more than 2 computers you need a hub. Else you can save the cost Hub, its power connection... the place for it.. all the messing .. everything can be avoided.. if you need only TWO computers to be linked. All you need for a two computer network is a CROSSOVER CABLE instead of the standard PATCH CABLE. This works much more nicely and the NICS speed will be fully achieved without HUB doing the intermediary work.
3. Two NICS.. I suggest good brand NICS atleast with RTL8139 chipset ones, if costlier brands are not taken.
4. Patch cables to connect computers to Hub or the CROSSOVER cable to connect the two computers. CROSSOVER CABLE will cost the same as PATCH CABLE.
b. Now How do we go about...
1. Install the nics in the computers. (remember to unplug all those stuff and the inserting of cards.. restarting the computer and applying the driver to get the NIC properly recognised by the computer OS)
2. Follow thread....
Networking Windows 2000 and Windows9x
faq616-800
Hope this helps you... If you are making the cable yourself... remember the following points
1. The cable used shall be atleast CAT5 quality twisted pair cables.
2. The pairs used shall be from the same twists..
say one pair of twists in position 1 & 2 of the RJ hook
and one pair of twists in position 3 & 6 of the RJ hook
3. The connections are one to one for normal patch cables.
If they are CROSSOVER CABLES then position 3 & 6 shall
be interchanded on the other end RJ connectors.
