Storing/Retrieving Images in SQL

There has already been a lengthy discussion on this topic. But, I would really like someone to give me some straightforward pointers on storing and retrieving (displaying in VB) images (photos). The number of photos could run into thousands and I want to explore the SQL storage option then compare it with simply retrieving the photo via a path from a folder (which is going to slow down considerably as the number of files increases).
