stop error on start up

Hey all,

I got voluntered to help out a family friend who has Windows ME. I know nothing about ME and they get a stop error on start up, and their computer will not go any further than that. I had them try to start with safe mode, and with last known good configuration. Both times produced the same results. I don't know what to tell her, but would like to help her as well. I did ask if any hardware and/or software has been installed recently, and I was informed that nothing was changed lately. Another issue is that I live 1.5 hours away, and accessibility to her computer is very slim. Any suggestions?

What's the text of the stop error? Have you tried a Google search using stop error text? I can't remember - does ME allow a step by step boot (95/8 do, but I've a feeling this was removed along with dos mode from ME)?

Would suggest removing any PCI/ISA cards (sound, modem, network etc - not graphics of course) & see if it boots.
