Hi There Ladies and Gents,

(this is an XP home question .. not pro)

Got a bugger of an issue on a customers laptop. This morning they were downloading thier e-mail when outlook expressed crashed and the system re-bottoed ... its not in a cycle of booting to windows .. then blue screen for about 1/2 a second and then re-boots again.

I have tried all my diagnossis on it ... including booting from last config and things like that ... in safe mode nothing runs. everything seems to make the system blue screen.

I have taken the step of re-installing over the top of the old windows installation .. but as it is installing i get the bluesreen stop error 0x000000004e ... saying the PFN_list is corrupt.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks,

Rob

What brand/model laptop?

Have you tried swapping out the memory?

Its an advent laptop ... and unfortunatly my customer no longer has the system recovery CD ... so was using another copy of Windows XP upgrade that they had bought ... i havnt tried swapping the memory out ... i dont have any spare notebook strips.

now have the issue that if i try running the installation from the CD ... its says ... "no current windows installed ... please place an official cd in today verify you qualify for an uprade ect ect".

I am drasticly trying to find a copy of a previous windows version.

Since it is an up grade cd you will have to place a windows cd from a different version of windows. Such as windows 98, windows me, windows 2000. Not upgrade cd but full versions. After it checks to see you had a god windows cd of a former version the it will prompt you to insert the xp upgrade cd and proceed with the installation.

Thanks for the Comments Chapps,

I have used a full version of XP to authenticate that i am allowed to use the upgrade CD.

During the installation of the OS it struddles to find a few of the DLL's that it rquires.

I have now ordered a fresh copy of the origional manufacturers disks. this should make things a little easier.

Many Thanks,

Rob

This quote from the Newsgroups supports your thoughts.

"a computer preinstalled with an OEM version of XP Home might not upgrade using a retail version of XP Pro upgrade. This is especially true of laptop computers that have a customized OEM version of XP Home installed. In that case, only a clean install will work. Laptop computers require specialized hardware drivers not found in the conventional "retail, upgrade" version of Windows XP. It would have been best if you had initially called HP support and ordered HP's version of Windows XP
Pro for your specific HP computer." - Carry FISH

BTW, have you considered it may be the hard disk going bad, and to pull the drive to copy any data off of it? There are adapters so you can slave it off a regular PC.

Matt J.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Thanks for the help guys .... you both win a purple star! ...

I now have a copy of the Manufacturers disks, unfortunatly bacause i tried my own copu of XP first it wont let me do a standard repair from the recovery disks, so i have to format the drive anyways.

I am going to try and hunt out an adapter to make a copy of the data... thanks again,

Rob
