I am using an ACER laptop with Windows XP Professional installed. Prior to the error I downloaded the latest Live Update for Nortons Antivirus, then powered off the machine for the night. When I next started the machine I got a STOP error: STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xAAE1F4D0, 0xF8898FC8, 0xF8898CC4) "A Problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer."
I have tried working through the responses (in safe mode, restore, etc) but this has not worked. When I tried to restore to an earlier date, in safe mode, the laptop restarts but I still get the same error. I have searched the web for the error but can only find "STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, " none of the rest of the error seems to exist.
I am a bit stuck as to what to do next. I did read something last night about recovering with "set up" floppy discs but I don't have a floppy drive and that was the only solution I could find. Can anyone help me to resolve the error please? And does anyone know how to make a "set up" CD for the laptop (will these help me?) or for the future please? Thanks in advance. granty

granty39,
After putting your original Windows cd in the drive run "sfc/scannow" (no quotes) from a command line ([start][run]) This will check all of the protected windows files to be sure they are in their original state.

0x0000007E: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

A system thread generated an exception which the error handler did not catch. There are numerous individual causes for this problem, including hardware incompatibility, a faulty device driver or system service, or some software issues. Check Event Viewer (EventVwr.msc) for additional information.

My opinion: get rid of NORTON, ergo uninstall NORTON COMPLETELY in SafeMode, then reboot...

There after, follow what member BOBW mentioned, or do a REPAIR INSTALL ( this may or may not work unless NORTON has been removed)...

Hi Bob W,

Thanks for your response. However, when I got the laptop I did not get an original Windows CD with it. Is there anything I can do to get around this or will I need to buy one now?

Thanks again

granty39,
I understand that this sometimes happens with an "other-than-new pc". You should ask whomever you obtained this from if they have the disk. They should be able to provide it. Good luck! Definitly follow the process to remove Norton!

Bob W,

Thanks again for the quick response. I will remove Nortons as soon as I can (probably the weekend now) and let you know what happens. Hopefully this will fix things and I won't need to worry about the Windows CD.

Out of interest what Anti-virus and/or Internet security do you use? I am using Nortons Internet Security 2006 quite happily on my desktop. I was about to purchase the same for the laptop as the curently installed version is Nortons Antivirus 2005, which came with the laptop. If I remember right, there is also Zone Alert running on the laptop ???

With regards to the Windows CD, however, the laptop was bought brand new off the internet from The laptop make is an Acer. I don't know if I should have got a CD or not but I didn't. The laptop is not even a year old yet.

Thanks again for your time.

No, you don't get an XP CD with the Acer notebooks(or the Toshiba notebooks that I purchased last year). However, after you applied all the MS updates, etc. there should have been an option to burn a set of Recovery CDs or DVDs. My Travelmate 5100 burned to one DVD.

Cheers.

granty39,

At the moment I am using McAfee, I am pleased with its protection and the included malware scanning. I have previously used f-prot and think it is even better - it is updated more often which is always "a good thing" You can download a trial at and see for yourself.
As far as the Windows disk - things have changed significantly the past few years and I am not sure if there is a standard. Management where I work recently purchased several hundred Dell Optiplex GX620's and each had a Windows CD with it. Considering what cmeagan656 states, this must not be standard. I have not had experience creating the recovery disks but will be checking into that. Best of luck to you.

granty39,
Simply removing (uninstalling) Norton may NOT be enough. You may have to go into the system registry and search for Norton. DELETE all Norton entries.

Norton can be a real pain in the butt to remove. I hate that program. Unfortunetly, I am forced to use it here at work. At home I use AVG. It's free and seems to work well. Do a google search to find the avg home page.

I eventually got round to doing something with this. I tried deleting Nortons from safemode but it was not going to have it. I tried deleting drivers and letting it find them again, but still know.

I then stumbled across my system cd and two recovery cd's that came with the laptop (I hadn't seen them since when I first got the laptop and had completely forgotten about them). I followed the instructions to reformat the hard drive and put it back to the manufacturers original image - a bit drastic I know but I felt I was getting no-where with what I was doing. Anyway, I am now back into windows and just need to do a bit of tweeking to get the network connected and then find the antivirus (as recommended above)

Thanks for all your input.

AVG can be found here It is a very good piece of software, updates regularly and doesn't consume vast amounts of your system resources a la Norton. Been using the pro version for two years now and not had any virus trouble.

I did find the free AVG version and I have loaded it onto my laptop. I agree it is a good bit of software so I might upgrade to the pro version also.

Thanks for your comment, aich69.
