HI there,

i have changed my nt4 wins server to a samba server but i need to add static mappings so my print servers (dlink 303) can be resolved by name. any ideas on how to do this?

Regards,

Russ

And what about a lmhosts file ?

Hope This Help, PH.

Lmhosts files are OK, but they come back and bite you in the bum a year later when you've forgotten all about them!

Hmm yes i agree that lmhosts would work, but i would have to add it on every client, and of curse you are right F1LBY it would come back and bite me. especially since this seems to be the whole point of wins.

anyone any other ideas, i cant believe samba left this out
it seems a fairly common practice!

cheers

Russ

Adding static entries to your Samba WINS server goes something like this.

You have to add a line to wins.dat which can be found in /usr/local/samba/var/locks or /var/run/samba.

Entries in wins.dat take the form of:

"NAME#TYPE" TTL ADDRESS+ FLAGS

where NAME is the NetBIOS name, TYPE is the NetBIOS type, TTL is the time-to-live as an absolute time in seconds, ADDRESS+ is one or more addresses corresponding to the registration and FLAGS are the NetBIOS flags for the registration.

A typical dynamic entry looks like this:

"CLIENTPC#03" 1055298378 192.168.1.12 66R

To make it static, all that has to be done is set the TTL to 0, like this:

"CLIENTPC#03" 0 192.168.1.12 66R
